** WE NEED YOUR HELP **
We are closer than ever to getting the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and
Government Pension Offset (GPO) changed for seniors. Too many seniors are affected
by these unfair laws. Seniors have paid their fair share into the social security system
during their careers and are getting a raw deal with reduced benefits. It is not right.
We need you to call your state representatives and senators now.
Find your Senator and House Representative’s contact information here:
We especially need to reach out to (2 )Massachusetts representatives who have not yet co-sponsored this bill: Neal Richard (202) 225-5601 and Katherine Clark (202) 225-2836.
Call and tell them to support H.R. 82 - Social Security Fairness Act of 2023 in the
118th Congress (2023-24). This bill currently has 286 co-sponsors. We need
290 co-sponsors to get this to the house floor. The Senate has a similar bill
S.597 - Social Security Fairness Act which currently has 44 co-sponsors.
Tell him or her to co-sponsor these bills and support legislature that will eliminate
the WEP and GPO. Also tell him or her to encourage his or her peers to also
co-sponsor these bills. We must get these unfair laws changed so seniors can receive
their earned social security benefits.
WEP, which affects approximately 1.9 million individuals nationwide, reduces the Social Security benefits
of retirees that both receive a pension from working in a non-covered Social Security job and for working
less than 30 years in a covered Social Security job. Using a modified Social Security formula, SSA drastically
cuts the percentage a retiree receives from the first $996 (adjusted annually) of Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME)
from 90 percent to 40 percent.
GPO, which affects over 700,000 Social Security beneficiaries, applies to those receiving Social Security
spousal or widow(er)’s benefits. Individuals that fall under this provision are subject to a 2/3 reduction
in their Social Security spousal or widow(er)’s benefits.
